Written in the Waters: A Memoir of History, Home, and Belonging

by Tara Roberts

Tara Roberts is a National Geographic Fellow and this memoir has all the characteristics of a work published by National Geographic operating at its very best. It combines an honest, clear personal journey related by the author with her descriptions of her physical journey around the Atlantic and Indian oceans, tracing out the routes taken by ships carrying enslaved peoples from the eastern and western coasts of Africa to the Americas. Most people living in the US in 2025 know at least something about the Middle Passage and yet, Roberts manages to highlight histories and geographies that typically receive much less attention. She also focuses on the work of current archaeologist-scuba divers intent on exploring and learning from the sunken wrecks of ships that sank during the Middle Passage. Fascinating, educational, and poignant.
